‘It must be a cat trait,’ Dan suggested at lunch, ‘but how would we know? Why do cats have to remember things, anyway?’

‘If I get egg and lettuce one more time…’ Sam frowned, and dropped the sandwich back into the paper bag.

‘Here, swap you,’ Dan offered his ham and tomato sandwich. ‘I hate tomato.’

Sam happily took the offerings, and without delay bit into the sandwich.

Dan continued. ‘So why do you think cats have a great memory?’ he asked again.

Sam looked around to make sure no one could hear them in the lunchroom and then shrugged. ‘Don’t know, but dogs do. When we walk our dog, Muffy, at home…’

‘Muffy?’ Dan cut in.

Sam shot him a look. ‘Mum named him. Muffy remembers everything; like where other dogs live, where he last saw a cat, what time we walk, maybe it’s the same for cats.’

Dan shrugged. ‘Don’t know. But it will be great around exam time, as long as you don’t explode from brain overload! I wonder if I’ll get any super crow traits. My eyesight is already better.’

‘It’s great to have these, uh, new skills,’ Sam said, diplomatically. ‘But I’m always scared where they may lead to or when they may run out or worse still… we get ones that we don’t want,’ Sam said, ‘like licking myself clean which I really want to do, a lot.’

‘We need to make sure we document this,’ Dan said. ‘I’ll write up the effects in the journal. It may help someone else in the future. If someone had done that for us, it would be great right now.’

‘Yeah, that would be handy. But Siggy knows, I’m sure he does. It’s his book.’ Sam reminded Dan.

‘Great, let’s call him and tell him we need to talk about the cat and crow experiment when he is free,’ Dan joked.

Sam grinned. ‘Works for me. So, about the rabbits? Should we just ask Emma and Chloe?’ He polished off the rest of the sandwich and screwed the paper bag into a ball.

Dan frowned, lowered his voice and leaned forward to talk with Sam. ‘How do we do that? Maybe we could just say “Hey, can you pass the butter and by the way after the carrot last night, any chance you became a rabbit?” What do you think?’

Sam laughed again. He didn’t notice the twins arriving behind him.

‘What’s so funny?’ Emma asked, and dropped beside him into a chair at the lunch desk.

Sam’s eyes widened and he glanced at Dan for an answer. Emma and Chloe studied them both. The twins were dressed the same in pink and white striped tops and jeans with white runners.

Sam reached for his can of cola, took a sip and then shrugged, buying time. He swallowed. ‘Dan was telling me a bad joke.’

‘Tell us, Dan,’ Chloe said, and smiled enthusiastically.

Dan nearly choked on the remains of his sandwich. He swallowed and gave Sam a look that would have soured any cat’s milk. His mind raced ahead trying to think of a joke.
